Victoria coroner ties actor's death to unapproved peptides

Norton, 75, died at the Alfred Hospital on March 30, 2025. The coroner cites six other TGA anaphylaxis or hypersensitivity reports for related peptides.

Victorian Coroner David Ryan published findings dated October 28, 2026 that the death of Australian actor and stuntman Richard John Norton was triggered by his injection of the unapproved peptide product CJC-1295/ipamorelin. Norton, 75, died at Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital on March 30, 2025. The primary record is the court’s finding into death without inquest (COR 2025 001710).

Ryan wrote that he was satisfied the injection caused an anaphylactic reaction, which in turn led to cardiac arrest. The formal cause of death lists complications of an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, with anaphylaxis, and asthma and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy as contributing factors. ABC News and 7NEWS reported that Norton’s death is believed to be the first confirmed fatality in Australia known to have been triggered by unapproved peptide use — a framing that appears in secondary coverage, not in the finding’s own wording.

How the peptides were obtained

Norton approached Dr. Jerzy Muchnicki on March 11, 2025, saying he was interested in peptide therapy and had previously been prescribed peptides by another practitioner for fatigue, reduced recovery, shoulder pain and loss of lean muscle mass. The doctor discussed the experimental nature of the treatment, potential risks and the lack of TGA-approved alternatives. Norton signed an informed consent form that identified anaphylaxis as a risk for CJC-1295 and ipamorelin.

On March 19, 2025, Muchnicki prescribed the unapproved products in injection form. The coroner recorded that the medication was obtained from a licensed compounding pharmacy in Queensland and forwarded to Norton. On March 28, 2025, Norton told a clinic nurse that he had been taking amounts in excess of what his doctor prescribed; the nurse advised him to return to the prescribed amount the following week. Hours later, after injecting CJC-1295 and ipamorelin, he became unresponsive. Amino Wire does not publish dosing amounts; the finding’s statement that he took more than prescribed is the limit of what we report.

AHPRA, the Medical Board and the TGA

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) received a notification raising concerns about Muchnicki’s care. The Medical Board of Australia investigated and obtained an independent report from Clinical Professor Alistair Vickery, who said there is insufficient evidence that CJC-1295/ipamorelin is safe, effective or beneficial for human use. He found clinical care was at a reasonably expected standard given consent and prior use, but judged the doctor’s notes “sparse, inadequate and perfunctory” and said the doctor should have contacted Norton directly before re-prescribing on March 28. The board cautioned Muchnicki and imposed education and audit conditions.

The court obtained a TGA statement dated September 18, 2026. The TGA said CJC-1295 and ipamorelin, BPC-157 and Thymosin B4, and TB-500 are not listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods and are therefore unapproved therapeutic goods, classified as prescription-only medicines in Schedule 4 of the Poisons Standard. The TGA reported six other anaphylaxis or hypersensitivity cases involving those products, including three anaphylaxis cases with CJC-1295 and ipamorelin, not including Norton.

The Schedule 10 recommendation

Ryan said: “I am not satisfied that it is appropriate for them to be available to be prescribed by medical practitioners.” He added that it is not clear how their safe use can be clinically indicated given uncertainties about therapeutic benefit and risks “(as yet not fully known) to the safety of patients.”

He recommended that the TGA review the therapeutic benefits and safety risks of peptides such as CJC-1295/ipamorelin and consider further restrictions, including classification under Schedule 10 of the Poisons Standard — substances of such danger to health as to warrant prohibition of supply and use — with possible exceptions such as clinical trials or other experimental use.

What is not known

  • Whether the TGA will accept the Schedule 10 recommendation or take another path.
  • How many additional adverse-event reports have been filed since the TGA’s September 2026 court statement.

What to watch

TGA’s public response and any Poisons Standard amendment; AHPRA follow-through on education conditions; and whether other Australian jurisdictions publish peptide-linked harm data beyond New South Wales’ earlier emergency-department count (our report).

Frequently asked questions

What did the coroner conclude caused Richard Norton's death?

Coroner David Ryan found the death was triggered by injection of the unapproved peptide product CJC-1295/ipamorelin. The injection caused an anaphylactic reaction that led to cardiac arrest. Contributing factors listed include asthma and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

What did the coroner ask the TGA to do?

Ryan recommended that the TGA review the therapeutic benefits and safety risks of peptides such as CJC-1295/ipamorelin and consider further restrictions, including classifying them under Schedule 10 of the Poisons Standard (with possible exceptions such as clinical trials).

Had the peptides been prescribed by a doctor?

Yes. Dr. Jerzy Muchnicki prescribed CJC-1295 and ipamorelin after consultations in March 2025. The products were compounded by a licensed Queensland pharmacy and are not listed on Australia's Register of Therapeutic Goods.
