Is BPC-157 legal? Its FDA status, step by step

Is BPC-157 legal in the US? Not FDA-approved, out of Category 2 since April 2026, backed by FDA advisers in July, awaiting an interim policy.

The short answer ·

Not for human use. BPC-157 is not an FDA-approved drug and cannot lawfully be marketed for people, though it is not a federal controlled substance. It left FDA's compounding Category 2 in April 2026 because its nomination was withdrawn, but it is not on the 503A bulks list.

FDA's advisory committee voted 8-6 on July 23, 2026 to recommend adding it. That recommendation is nonbinding, and an interim access policy was still under OMB review on October 19, 2026. It is banned in sport under WADA's S0 class. Products sold online as research chemicals remain unapproved drugs when marketed for people.

BPC-157 (“body protection compound”) is a 15-amino-acid synthetic peptide. It is the most searched peptide in legality questions, and its status changed more in 2026 than any other’s. This page tracks it in date order.

How did BPC-157’s status change over time?

  • 2023: FDA places BPC-157 in Category 2 for 503A compounding. It cites possible immunogenicity, peptide-related impurities and API characterization problems, and “no, or only limited, safety-related information for the proposed routes of administration.”
  • April 15, 2026: FDA announces BPC-157 and 11 other peptides will leave Category 2 because nominations were withdrawn. This was procedural, with no change to safety findings (report).
  • July 23, 2026: The PCAC votes 8-6, with one abstention, to recommend BPC-157 for the 503A bulks list. AJMC reported FDA reviewers found the available studies, including five trials, too short and small to establish safety or effectiveness for the nominated use (ulcerative colitis).
  • July 30, 2026: In sentencing the Paradigm Peptides owner, CBS noted BPC-157 was among the unapproved drugs he was charged with selling (report).
  • October 14, 2026: An interim access policy for compounding certain peptides reaches OMB. AP reported it is intended to cover BPC-157.

What did FDA’s scientists say?

FDA’s briefing document for the July meeting sets out the immunogenicity concern. As a 15-amino-acid peptide given by injection or nasally, BPC-157 “may pose a significant risk for immunogenicity, potentially amplified by aggregation as well as potential peptide-related impurities.” The document says the nominators “did not provide, and we did not identify any studies that formally investigated the immunogenicity of BPC-157 products.”

None of the steps above affect vials sold online as research chemicals. Those are not compounded drugs. The question for them remains whether the seller’s marketing shows they are meant for people (RUO explainer). A purity figure on a COA also does not address sterility or endotoxin, which matter for anything injected (endotoxin testing).
